The Honduras Volunteer Program
Grassroots programming Central America that gets to the heart of one of the worst HIV epidemics in the region. Based in the ocean side town of Tela, on Honduras's North Coast, World Camp Honduras is committed to teaching HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention at the local level in Northern Honduras. Our last two years of programming have given us a strong understanding of local needs and a wonderful platform for approaching 2008. We look forward to getting back into the agricultural communities and Garifuna fishing villages of the Northern Coast this July!
Education in Rural Schools
Modeled on our Malawi program, our education in
Honduras is
packaged in a two day camp format. Our
first day is wild and
exciting, imparting HIV/AIDS
knowledge through games,
journal activities,
and interactive demonstrations.
Students
really light up when they see our unique methods of
teaching, and a bond is formed that help our teachers
communicate more
effectively. These conversations are the
heart of our
programming, and promise to leave both students
and instructors plenty to think about. Our second day is a
long and personal conversation with young people about the
situations they are confronted with in their lives that may
lead to the spread of HIV. Though some instructors teach in
Spanish, local translators ensure that volunteers and
students get the most out of each meeting. Volunteers will
commute daily to and from schools and return to the World
Camp house at night. This young program evolves and changes
as we learn effective new ways to address both HIV/AIDS and
environmental issues specific to the region. This is an
exciting time to get involved with World Camp Honduras.
Volunteers play active roles in developing and modifying
curriculum specific to the Honduras Program.
Tela, Our Home
World Camp makes its home in Tela, a town rich with the
history of the United Fruit Company. The sea is calm and
warm, and the beaches stretch as far as the eye
can see.
While we stay very busy on our programs, we do have some
time to relax-which is a good thing, because Tela is perfect
for relaxing. Volunteers will live in a common house and
cook together every night. Breakfast is a great time to get
some Baleadas or a mango shakes. Some nights allow for a
group outing to local restaurants.
Spanish
Volunteers of all abilities are welcome, although preference
is given to instructors with a familiarity with the
language. Our translators ensure that strong communication
occurs in the classroom, and serve as a wonderful resource
to volunteers wanting to improve their Spanish. Teaching the
same curriculum everyday quickly makes you more familiar
with many Spanish terms, and plenty of opportunities exist
for you to practice your Spanish on the kids. Outside the
classroom, the city of Tela is a great place to get out and
mix with some warmhearted Hondurans. Many days you値l have
the opportunity to grab lunch downtown, where you can get a
very robust meal for under $2. Ordering food can be
daunting, but your hunger will make you a quick learner.
Additional Activities
The school schedule in Honduras doesn稚
let us teach every day, so we make ourselves busy by
pitching in
on other great projects. We値l travel to a local
orphanage for boys recovering from drug addictions and
street life. We値l also work with a local conservation
association improving National Parks for much needed
tourism. While every school day is a travel day, we値l have
two longer trips away from Tela. The first will
take us to
the Rio Cangrejal river valley outside of La Ceiba. We値l
work in a very rural school there and visit with community
members, then hang out beside the river for a couple days of
relaxing in the beautiful
mountains of Honduras. We値l also
take a trip to lovely Copan, a quaint tourist town that is
home to some
great Mayan Ruins.
We Hope to see you in Honduras!
