Jordan Neal Henson Memorial Scholarship Fund
In loving memory: Jordan Neal Henson 1984-2004
World Camp has established a Memorial Scholarship
Fund in memory of Jordan Neal Henson who passed away on Friday
October 29, 2004. Jordan was the youngest brother of World Camp
founding member Baker Henson and accompanied the WC team on
their first trip to Malawi in the summer of 2001. He was 20
years old at the time of his passing and was a student at Warren
Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. The mission of
Jordan's fund is to support education and promote higher
learning for vulnerable young adults in impoverished
communities.
The mission of Jordan's fund is carried out
through individual education scholarships for secondary students
in the surrounding rural areas of Lilongwe, Malawi. In rural
Malawi, poverty prevents many young adults from seeking higher
education. Though primary school is free to the public,
secondary school requires a fee. The scholarships provide
financial support to vulnerable students who are faced with the
challenges of being orphaned by one or both of their parents.
The fund seeks out students who show promise for success in
secondary school but cannot afford the fees and living expenses
associated with secondary school in Malawi. The recipients of
this fund are selected by an application process and
recommendations from teachers and headmasters. The fund
provides school fees, book and supply allowances as well as
clothing and food allowances. Recipients are monitored by World
Camp program coordinators, World Camp volunteers, local area
management and an assigned Malawian mentor and role model.
During the year of 2006, the fund grew to support
7 individual recipients of Mdzobwe Community Day Secondary
School. Three of the current recipients finished their fourth
and final term of school in December 2006. Their graduation and
passing of exams is a great success for this scholarship fund.
This success in addition to donations from private individuals
has set the stage for World Camp to increase the number of
students receiving scholarships. With the assistance of World
Camp volunteers, family and friends, the number of students
receiving education scholarships increased to 18 recipients in
five secondary schools surrounding Lilongwe in January 2007.
World Camp is actively seeking sponsors to
support these students in school. Sponsors are able to pledge
support for one term to four years.
