NEW for January 2010: Apply to be a World Camp Teacher Facilitator!!

A teacher workshop in an outdoor classroom

Teacher Facilitators volunteer with the rest of the group for the session, but where volunteers work primarily with the students at the schools, Facilitators work specifically with the Malawian teachers.

The Teacher Facilitator role is an essential aspect of our sustainability initiative in Malawi. Teachers at Primary Schools in Malawi are vital for World Camp’s impact on children, as teachers are some of the most respected members of their communities. World Camp seeks to empower students with the knowledge and means to combat HIV/AIDS and deforestation. Being that teachers are the ones working with students each day long after World Camp leaves, they are our greatest resource in ensuring the efficacy of our curriculum. The role they play in continuing our work, establishing HIV/AIDS awareness clubs, and inspiring children is necessary to the success and sustainability of our programming.

At each camp, two volunteers assume the role of Teacher Facilitator. The three-day camp is spent in an information workshop designed to open conversation about these issues. Teacher Facilitators work closely with teachers from Standards 1-8 throughout the workshop. Volunteers facilitate conversations with teachers about World Camp curriculum, our teaching methods, and the specific challenges their community faces in the midst of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Specific activities include focus topic discussions, observation of classes, team-building games, question and answer sessions, brain-storming ideas for HIV and environmental awareness in the surrounding villages, and creating a presentation for the school on the final day of camp.

You may be interested in the Teacher Facilitator role if you are a trained teacher, or prefer working with adults during your volunteer experience.  If you are interested in specifically working with teachers for the session, please indicate so by checking the box provided on the volunteer application.
