Malawi Program
Q. Can we bring clothes to give away to the
children at the schools?
A. While
we do not encourage volunteers to give away things at the
schools since they will not have something for each child in
their group, many volunteers give away clothing or other items
to the family that hosts them during the homestay. Past
volunteers have given clothing and other items to the street
kids when we do a program with them. Extra clothing can also be
used to barter with street vendors at the markets.
Q. Is there a place for volunteers to go running?
A. There is a golf course 1/4 mile from our house
in Lilongwe. Volunteers can go in groups to the golf course to
go running at times when the golf course is not busy and crowded
with golfers. Girls must wear pants or a skirt on the way to
the golf course but may run in shorts while there.
Q. Should we bring food from home?
A. Volunteers are responsible for their breakfast
each morning as well as snacks. There is a Western grocery
store near the house, but this store does not have everything
you may find at home. Popular things to bring from home have
been Gatorade and energy bars.
Q. What do we do on weekends?
A. A typical week involves 6 days of work. At the
end of this long week we may go out to dinner as a group at a
nearby restaurant or go to a nearby casino and dance club. On
days off we may travel to Nkhoma to hike up a mountain or
organize a group trip to the outdoor markets in the city.
Q. How can we do laundry?
A. Volunteers can have their laundry done for $1
per bag. This service is provided about once per week.
Volunteers can wash their own clothes in the wash basins behind
the house and can purchase detergent at the local supermarket.
Q. Can we receive mail and packages?
A. Volunteers can receive packages although the
postal service is slow and somewhat unreliable. Packages sent
from the U.S. can take over a month to reach Malawi. The mailing
address in Lilongwe is:
PO Box 1866 Lilongwe
