How World Camp Started
World
Camp was founded in 2000 by university students
following their travels throughout southern Africa.
Seeing the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS and the
challenges it placed on children and their communities,
these students met with various ministries of education
in order to establish contacts and evaluate specific
country and regional needs.
The founding World Camp team (pictured at right) consisted of ten university
students who researched effective teaching methods and
developed curriculums for World Camp Malawi's
educational outreach programs. Relying on the support of
friends and family, the original World Camp team was
able to raise funds to cover program costs for the first
World Camp program. The pioneers of World Camp traveled to Malawi, Africa and
conducted 21 World Camp educational outreach programs in
regional rural primary schools.
Growth and Expansion
Since 2000, World
Camp's programming and scope has continued to grow and expand.
The number of volunteers who travel to Malawi with WC increases
every year, and we have expanded our program format to include
up to 20 volunteers per session, effectively doubling the number
of schools we visit and students that we reach. In 2006, a
group of motivated volunteers fundraised the seed money to begin
programming in Honduras. Two groups traveled to Honduras
during the summer of 2006, and volunteers have been returning
every summer since. Each trip brings increased knowledge
of the area, issues, and culture which improves our outreach
efficacy. Further, in 2007 volunteer alumni from the
Malawi program ventured to India to develop our outreach program
there. These trailblazers visited Ahmedabad in the state
of Gujarat that summer with a group of volunteers and built the
foundation for a true community presence. World Camp
India's activities continue to gain momentum and ongoing
research ensures our programming there increases in relevance
and effectiveness. |
